Why the island is at its best before the crowds – and the heat – arrive

Anyone who has landed in Palma on a summer’s day knows that first moment stepping off the plane. The heat hits you, even when you knew it was coming. ‘Oh, it’s so hot!’ you hear someone say  and everyone around them quietly agrees. Summer on Mallorca is intense and golden, and that warmth is exactly what draws millions to its beaches every year. But it comes with a dry, hazy edge that softens everything else into the background.

Spring is something else entirely

I love Mallorca in spring!

It might be the best-kept secret about this island — or at least the most underappreciated one. Except, perhaps, for the cyclists. They figured out long ago that spring is the perfect time to mix business with pleasure.

The air is cooler and cleaner. The sky is that deep, saturated blue that seems almost too good to be real. And everywhere — in the city, along the roads, out in the countryside — there is green. Not the dusty, sun-bleached green of August, but a fresh, alive, almost aggressive green that seems to come in dozens of shades all at once. It’s a different island.

Even Palma, busy with visitors year-round, feels lighter somehow. More open. A little more like itself, and genuinely welcoming.

Out in the rural parts of Mallorca the transformation is even more striking. Fields that looked parched and golden a few months ago are now lush and layered. Almond trees, which are among the first to bloom in January and February, have already finished their show, but the rest of nature is well into its own. The pace of life is slower too — or at least that’s how it feels once you step away from the construction sites.

In many places, the island is busy preparing for the season ahead: hotels being renovated, gardens tidied up, streets dug up and repaved. Spring on Mallorca has its own soundtrack, and it isn’t always birdsong. In true Spanish spirit, though, the work rarely goes on all day — which leaves the evenings free to shine, or at least to feel wonderfully, peacefully quiet by comparison. And when the streets aren’t jammed and the restaurants still have tables free, there’s actually room to look around and take it all in.

Breakfast on the terrace

One of my favourite things is breakfast on the terrace. It’s worth getting up a little earlier than usual. The morning light is soft and warm, the birds are in full conversation, and the air has that particular freshness that, come summer, you’ll only find if you’re up before the heat sets in. I could sit there for hours.

On some mornings I’m joined, at a distance, by a neighbour. She’s out early for very different reasons than I am. I can’t see her, but I don’t need to — the scent of freshly washed floors drifts across the quiet street, something herbal and clean that I’ve come to associate with Mallorca mornings. And then there are the pomelo trees in bloom. On warm evenings the scent spreads around the whole house – you notice people walking past slowing down slightly – it’s quite obvious why.

Lemon trees in flower aren’t bad either, but there is something special about the pomelo blossoms. That smell, drifting through an open window on a mild evening in April, is one of those things that makes you glad to be exactly where you are.

The sea

The sea is a different story. The spring sun has real warmth to it — enough to draw people onto the beaches, to shake off the grey days of winter and remember what it feels like to lie on warm sand. But the water hasn’t caught up yet. It’s cold. Too cold, at least for my taste… And yet some people go in anyway, which leads to one of the more entertaining scenes spring has to offer: on the same strip of beach, you’ll find someone wrapped in two layers of fleece standing next to someone in swimming shorts and sunscreen, both equally convinced they’re dressed appropriately.

Which brings up the very reasonable question of what to wear.

If you’re planning to visit in March or April

Expect warm, sunny days — but pack for variation. Evenings can be noticeably cool. Rain is possible, sometimes for several days in a row. Wind too. And then, without much warning, you can get a full week of perfect sunny weather that feels almost like summer. Layers are your friend. A light jacket for evenings is not optional. Everything else is negotiable.

Spring in Mallorca is unpredictable in the best way. It doesn’t promise you a beach holiday or a hiking trip or long lunches outdoors — it might deliver all three in the same week, or none of them. But what it does offer, reliably, is the island in a state of genuine beauty. Quieter, greener, and more alive than at any other time of year.

If you’ve only ever seen Mallorca in the height of summer, you’ve seen the popular version. Come in spring, and you’ll see the real one.

Saying that Mallorca is one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean is no surprise. For decades, travelers from all over the world have been coming here to enjoy the warm climate, beautiful beaches, and stunning nature.

But Mallorca offers so much more than a beach holiday. It’s not just about sun and sea anymore.

The island has changed. The old party image is slowly fading, and today many visitors come with a different mindset. They want to explore. They want to slow down. They want real experiences.

When we started discovering Mallorca ourselves, we quickly realized that this place has something special. It wasn’t just a destination anymore — it started to feel familiar. The landscapes, the light, the quiet mornings, and the long evenings by the sea made us want to stay longer each time. So, 5 years ago we decided to buy an apartment on the island and make Mallorca our second home. This must have been one of the best decisions we have ever made!

That’s actually also how the MallorcaDrive blog was born. It started with car rental experiences — and grew into a guide for exploring Mallorca with less stress and more freedom.

We created this site to share the island the way we experience it — with curiosity and a love for the details. We believe the best moments in Mallorca often happen away from the crowded spots, on a small road, in a local café, or at a beach you didn’t plan to visit.
